This information sheet applies to students enrolled in:
· Honors Degrees where a research project is required, such as:
1) Bachelor of Information Science Honors (BInfSc(Hons))
2) Bachelor of Business Studies Honors (BBS(Hons)).
· Postgraduate Diplomas where student elects to complete a research project, such as:
3) Postgraduate Diploma in Information Science (PGDipInfSc)
Students enrolled in a Postgraduate Certificate, or who intend to complete the PGDipInfSc without a research project, consult the without a research project information sheet information sheet.
Note: All students intending to go on to a Masters Degree must complete a research project.
PGDip students with a research project take six taught papers in advanced topics in Information Technology, plus 158.799 IT Project (double paper).
See Table below for details.
Up to 25% of the Diploma can be papers from related subject areas like Computer Science or Management (i.e. 2 papers).
Most full-time students normally take:
Semester 1: IT Research Project (Part 1) and three taught papers
Semester 2: IT Research Project
(Part 2), and three taught papers
Note that Research Methods is taught as part of the 158.799 IT Research Project, which starts in Semester 1. Students CAN NOT attempt to complete both parts of 158.799 in the same semester. A Research Project almost always requires more time to complete than a 13-week semester allows.
Generally, part-time students follow the schedule for full-time students, but stretch it over two years. A typical part-time student will take five taught papers in the first year, and the IT Project in the second year.
· Information Technolog Research Project (158.799): This 30 credit paper is your research project and is the principal focus of your postgraduate degree. It is taken as a year-long paper, beginning in semester 1 and running over two semesters. The paper introduces you to the research process and provides the learning you need to conduct your research project.
As of Jan 2008, the IS Group was renamed the IT Group, because the College of Business took back the 157.xxx series of papers from the College of Science. The IT Group now offers a brand new 158.xxx series of papers. While the 157.xxx series now offers no Postgrad papers, the 158.xxx series does, so if you want IS/IT postgrad choose 158 .xxx papers.
